Product and Packaging Design

K-Ten

This is a proposal of an alternative sanitary pads that are sustainable, eco-friendly and healthier. The above is a sample created for a studio course that required us to choose supermarket items to upgrade sustainably. Sanitary pads are an essential product, yet extremely toxic to the environment with the multiple plastic layers from the packaging to the product itself.

K-ten is a name that comes from a conceptual original "pack of ten pads" and a double meaning in Arabic of  linen which is "Kit-ten)". They are targeted to lower income women in Egypt mainly, who cannot afford to spend money monthly on sanitary pads, but rather can use these alternatives, that are reusable, with washing instructions printed on fabric.

Theoretically, this product would be created of multiple layers of bamboo and linen fabrics and once they have been washed and used for too long, bio-degrading will not be as toxic as plastic.

The production process was a long one but a truly enlightening one. From sourcing and buying the fabrics, to finding a tailor who would agree to sew pads, to cutting the patterns for the panties to save time, every step was strange but useful.

Printed Instructions Detalis

Printed on fabric so that it could be safely preserved, the label shares "our story" and benefits, instructions on how to wear the pad in the designed panty that has 2 straps to secure the pad (shown in top image), washing techniques and tips.
