Thesis Project

This bilingual website and application is dedicated to sharing recipes of DIY biodegradable materials. The initial plan of the project was to create potential materials out of Egyptian agricultural waste that would form biodegradable packages to replace the current polluting plastic packages; the aim was to reduce agricultural and plastic waste in Egypt by up cycling the agricultural waste into plastic-replacing packages. The project then evolved into a community that would potentially ignite a nation-wide movement, where people start trying out recipes of up cycling their kitchen wastes into new materials out of these recipes and further encourage them to even create their own.

It's a bit of a scroll, but an enjoyable one!

The Web Version

This website was created in Arabic to target the widest public of Egypt possible, and become as effective as can be with ALL Egyptians. This is the first step into creating a materials archive, but currently, there are only three wastes categories: Banana Peels, Tomato Peel and Watermelon Peels, of which all are prominently present and used in the Egyptian market. Under each kind of waste there are 3 categories: "History and Context of Waste to Egypt", "Material Recipes" and "Mold Recipes".

All elements, illustrations, photography, recipes, diagrams etc. have been created by me. Most recipes have been inspired by paper making techniques, or pre-existing recipes with tweaks to adapt to the purpose of my project.

Each recipe for a material or mold has time indicators of approximately how much time it will take to create the material and how much time it will take for it to dry.

This is the watermelon color coded section. Image 1 is part of the illustrations in the recipe and image 2 is the ratio of watermelon production to waste in Egypt.

One of the Diagrams/ Patterns to create a designated mold.

Drop down menu to further enhance the concept of creating a community where you can ask questions, send suggestions or share recipes.

This is the mobile version of the website, to make the recipes and content available to as many people as possible at all times. As a baker, my phone is my main source of recipes, i just grab it, and go back and forth between it and the meal being prepared.

The Mobile Version

Color-coded to the tomatoes section, image 1 is the menu that appears after choosing a waste, and it is followed by the menu bar of "context to Egypt", "materials recipes" and "mold recipes". Image 2 is the menu that appears depicting all the materials that could be created out of tomato peels (or the chosen material). Each circle represents the texture of the material; I created icons for each material that is inspired by its properties, textures and characteristics. Powder is on the top right for example. There is also a photo library where you can choose the material recipe based on its photo.

Tomato powder recipe, illustrated and created by me. There are texture indicators in each recipe under the photo of the material, and the time indicators with the title and the designated logo per material on top of the photo. The first red bar has the ingredients, followed by alternating colors representing the steps of the recipe and instructions beneath each illustration. Some have video recorded recipes.

Content Creation

This is the content creation segment of my Thesis project: Creating Bio-Materials as potential replacements for plastic packaging while raising awareness about the importance of the matter through a website with illustrated recipes, video recipes, indicated textures for users to try as DIY projects from home (using household kitchen waste). Below you will find a "materials library", "illustrations library", "product photography", "texture indicators library", "logo variants", "pattern library" and "material recipes" that I created for the final website.
